The Mirror Waigeo Island, Raja Ampat, Indonesia
Some of the most spectacular coral gardens of the world are found in Raja Ampat, located on the east end of Indonesia. It is common to see batfish in this region. These graceful fish surround the reefs in large groups, swimming rapidly and in unison. After observing them for a long while, I tried to capture the perfect synchronization that these fish accomplish when swimming. To achieve this, I had to float suspended on the same spot, turning and turning, following the rhythm of a huge school, of almost 40 fish, that kept circling around me. For just a moment, two of these fish broke out of formation. This enabled me to take this photograph, which looks as if it were only one fish and its reflection on a mirror.
